Felt products from Nepal
Felt – a material to produce wonderful items
The cleaned, combed and dyed raw wool is felted to produce a tight cloth. All these works are done by hand in Nepal. Most of the people who earn their livelihood in a production cooperative for small and very small manufacturers called ACP are women. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Over 90% of the inhabitants live from agriculture. However, the yields are not sufficient to feed the families. The mortality rate from malnutrition is 17%. ACP stands for fair trade. It opens up market opportunities to very small manufacturers who are at a commercial disadvantage. ACP assures reasonable payment for producers, healthy working conditions, no gender discrimination, and, above all, the prohibition of child labour. Furthermore, there are social benefits such as maternity protection, subsidies for school education, and even a pension scheme. It is a stroke of luck for the women who are offered the opportunity to improve the economic situation of their families.
