Hammrocks from Ecuador

In the north of Ecuador, near the city of Otavalo, Elena Muenala founded a small weaving factory which is supported by Plan. The manager of the company employs five men and four women who mainly produce colourful and strong hammocks and thus have been able to establish their livelihood. Otavalo is located 2,500 metres above sea level. The volcano of Imbabura (4610 metres), the highest volcano of the Andes, rises up above the city. Otavalo is world-famous for its weaving crafts. Ten minutes away from Otavalo, Elena Muenala has established a small factory and thus helped the villagers to overcome poverty. The women diligently and tirelessly process the cotton and then weave fabrics with beautiful patterns on their looms. The men operate the machines – a task that requires a lot of strength. The hand-made hammocks are of high quality, and the fabric is particularly thick and robust. They can bear a load of up to 110 kilograms. The bright blue and violet colours create a bit of the sunny atmosphere of the Andes in your garden, on the balcony or in the flat – no matter where you have a break. If you have ever gently swung in the hammock under the sun, you know how relaxing it is.
