You will enjoy these things made in Laos. The cotton is produced without using fertilisers and pesticides. The processing is also done without any chemicals. This helps to protect the environment and the health of both workers and buyers. It takes eight months until the cotton can be used for weaving. A few months after the blossoming, the capsules burst open and the cotton fibres ooze out. Then they are picked by hand, plucked to form small wads of wool and cleared from the rests of leaves and other dirt. The fibres are spun, manually dyed with natural dye and dried on poles. It is a very labour-intensive process. But you can see and feel the difference between manually processed bio cotton and mechanically produced cotton polluted through pesticides. It is very important to the designer Nikone Nanong from Vientiane to make sure that the ancient handicraft of producing hand-woven and naturally dyed cloths is preserved – and to improve the economic situation of the region at the same time. For the towels she has created a simple, but attractive design, which the weavers in the north of Laos then produce on their looms. The more products her range of goods comprises, the more women she can employ. Today she is employing more than 100 women and she is proud of the achievements she has made so far. A weaver earns 50 – 100 dollars per month, and this helps her to improve her family’s quality of life.
